Trick 'r Treat (2007)

Michael Dougherty's crafty Halloween anthology — four twisted stories, one mysterious trick-or-treater named Sam, and a stern rule: always respect the traditions of Halloween.

About

Trick 'r Treat is a 2007 American comedy-horror anthology film written and directed by Michael Dougherty in his directorial debut and produced by Bryan Singer. It stars Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin and Brian Cox. The film interweaves four Halloween horror stories set in the same town on the same night, bound together by a common thread: Sam, a small trick-or-treater in orange footie pajamas with a burlap sack for a head, who appears whenever a character breaks a Halloween tradition.

Dougherty's film grew out of his 1996 animated short Season's Greetings, which introduced Sam. Trick 'r Treat premiered at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon festival on December 9, 2007, skipped a wide theatrical run, and reached home video on October 6, 2009 — where it rapidly became one of the most beloved modern Halloween films.

The Plot

The film unfolds over a single Halloween night in the fictional town of Warren Valley, Ohio (a stand-in for smalltown America), told in a nonlinear, interlocking structure where characters cross paths and minor details echo across stories.

The film's closing shots tie the stories together — and Sam silently sets out to enforce the rules once more on the one Halloween night when Emma blew out her jack-o'-lantern too early.

"Leeches, ghouls, werewolves, vampires... and one very lucky soul who got to keep his pumpkin." A modern Halloween love letter with sharp teeth.

What Is Sam?

Sam is the film's breakout creation: a small, silent figure in orange footie pajamas with a burlap sack pulled over his head, its stitching suggesting a rough face beneath. He is not a trick-or-treater so much as a guardian spirit of Halloween — enforcing the holiday's unwritten rules and punishing anyone who breaks them, from blowing out a jack-o'-lantern too early to refusing a trick-or-treater a treat.

His look nods to the mystery and menace of the season, and he has become an enduring horror icon since the film's home-video release. He was played by Quinn Lord.

Filming Locations

Trick 'r Treat was filmed entirely on location in and around Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada — a common stand-in for American small towns thanks to its versatility and North American look. Vancouver's residential streets, parks and woodland became the film's fictional Warren Valley, Ohio.

Where Are They NowThe Cast Then & Now

Dylan Baker (Steven Wilkins)

Already a prolific character actor before Trick 'r Treat, Baker has kept a steady, busy career on screen and stage — a reliable presence in films and acclaimed television well into the 2020s. He remains one of the most recognizable supporting actors working today.

Anna Paquin (Laurie)

The Oscar-winning actress (for The Piano) is best known to modern audiences as Sookie Stackhouse on HBO's True Blood. In recent years she has been selective with roles, focusing on family and advocacy, but remains a beloved figure of the 2000s horror-fantasy boom.

Brian Cox (Mr. Kreeg)

A venerable stage and screen giant, Cox reached a career zenith as Logan Roy on HBO's critically adored Succession, which ran 2018-2023 and won him wide acclaim (including Emmy and BAFTA nominations). He continues to command both films and the stage.

Quinn Lord (Sam)

The young actor who brought Sam to life has stayed active, appearing in films such as Nightmare Alley (2021) and continuing to make convention appearances as the beloved trick-or-treater. He remains closely identified with the role.

Leslie Bibb (Emma)

Bibb went on to a long string of film and TV roles, and in the 2020s gained renewed visibility — including a notable part in Marvel's Iron Man films and high-profile streaming series, keeping her a familiar face on screen.

Rochelle Aytes (Maria)

Aytes has been a steady television presence — notably on SWAT and CBS's Watson — continuing to build an active primetime career long after her role in the film.

Tahmoh Penikett (Henry)
